Antique 1870's figural Bison Buffalo seal press embosser. This figural embosser is rare. The Buffalo presses were patented in 1871 and again in 1874 as check cancelers. They were patented by R.B. Carsley & Co. of Chicago, IL.
This particular embosser was used by a man named C.S. Paisler of New Bedford, Mass. A little research shows he was active in business during that time in New Bedford which was a bustling, wealthy city then.
The embosser seal has a brass upper and lower die for marking checks. This figural press is in exceptionally good condition and was well taken care of. Most of these we see are old and worn. The brass and black paint are very nicely aged and intact. This will display well. No cracks or repairs. It measures 4 1/4" tall, 3 5/8" long and 2" wide. It is quite solid and heavy for its size. Great for any Americana collection. Western or New England.
